Didymo on the Rio Espolon, Chile

Didymosphenia geminata is emerging invasive species with an extraordinary capacity to impact stream ecosystems. In recent years, streams in New Zealand, North America, Europe, and Asia have been colonized by unprecedented masses of “didymo” and its extracellular stalks. This diatom is able to completely dominate stream bed surfaces, greatly altering physical and biological conditions within streams.

It is also referred to as: Didymo, Rock Snot, the Toilet Paper Weed, Moco de Roca.
